Aalto's Savoy Vase Re-Released by iittala

Almost 70 years ago, Alvar Aalto's interest in an Eskimo woman wearing leather pants inspired him to create a curvy glass vase. The Eskim_erindens skinnbux series of vases, drawn in crayon on scratch paper and cardboard, won the honor of prominent display at the 1937 World's Fair, and was eventually chosen for the decor at Helsinki's Savoy restaurant, a move that re-christened the vase, the Savoy.
The Savoy enchanted Scandanavian modernists for decades. And it’s undulating shape, and what is often perceived as the designer’s nod the natural curves and twists of Finland’s geography, give the vase a sense of the classic organic that never goes out of style. Now, premier Scandinavian glassmaker, iittala, is re-releasing the vase, and showing the Savoy in colors for a new generation to fall in love with.
