Stock Options Overload

I'm all for options -- God knows I love to impose my will when it comes to choosing colors, heights and widths. But man, how do you retailers take it? I was looking at a particular manufacturer's line for my office, and the catalog was the most daunting material I'd ever seen. A stapled-together hodge podge of line drawings, I would literally need to assemble my office from the base up. Not for nothing, but I have a magazine to publish. I can't be sifting through schematics that look the instructions that come with kids toys.

I expected a color brochure where I got to pick from component A -- and add B, C or D, changing colors here or there. If these manufacturers are targeting the architects who are into custom, so be it. But I don't think that's the case. People can't handle this many choices, and many retailers tell me they'd be insane to take on the liability of trying to order all those different parts. Especially when some of these products are on 8-12 week delivery. What if you put the dash in the wrong place?

Choice is good, but infinite combinations just confuses the hell out of the customer. Agree? disagree? share your thoughts and let me know if you are a 'tailer or designer.
