Mobiles are a must for any baby's room, but the cloying, pastel puffy animal variety just don't make for a clean, modern setting. So follow the Calder example as artist Julie Frith did when she decided to offer her Calder-esque mobiles in a wide selection of baby-friendly colors.
"[Mobiles are] modern art for newborns!," says Frith. "Mobiles have always been an attraction for babies. Their eyes are caught by the movement of shapes. Calming their unknown fears of independence, the child can grow up with the mobile in their room, without the embarrassment of babyness."
Frith's mobiles come in the red, white, black and yellow colorways you'd expect from a mobile and stabile artist. But with the exuberant "Colorize It!" button, she also lets the consumer click through a series of numbers that correspond to different color choices for each design. Choose "11" on the Lustron mobile for example, and you've got a mix of yellow, green, aqua, blue, black and red. It's easy to find designs and colors that parents and babies will be drawn too.
And Frith considers her mobiles to be a lifelong gift for a child. "Taking the modern mobile to college, children will always remember their beginnings of comfort," she says.
