Easy Modern: How to Build a Concrete Countertop
Fu-Tung Cheng is one of our favorite designers. He's a concrete guru living and working in Zen mode, able to produce a constant stream of new and exciting work. His latest is a third book/DVD. "Concrete Countertops Made Simple" takes readers through the process of designing, forming, pouring, finishing, and installing a concrete countertop that will look great and survive the test of time. Cheng shows all that’s needed to produce a practical, personalized countertop within two weeks using basic tools and materials available from a local homebuilding store. The projects are:
- Affordable. With concrete mixes purchased at a local hardware or homebuilding store, any contractor or homeowner can easily build a concrete countertop for about $15 per square foot (and less than $8 per square foot on materials). Compare that to about $25-$40 psf for plastic laminate, $40-$80 psf for granite, $60-$100 psf for stone.
- Fast. In two weekends, a homeowner can complete a simple slab on a basic cabinet.
- Timeless. Concrete countertops work across architectural styles – modern to traditional.
- Easy. Once reserved for only the highest-end architectural design projects, Fu-Tung Cheng shares the secrets so anyone can do it.
- Unique. Concrete countertops can be customized in myriad ways.
- Green. Concrete countertops are durable, made from local materials and support recycling.
